Chick-fil-A: It Takes Two

As I have watched over the past few weeks, excitement–on both sides of the waffle fry–has grown. I’ve read angry articles, fussy tweets and begrudged Facebook statuses. However, I’ve also read positive articles, uplifting tweets and commendable Facebook statuses. I have not a single complaint about either one; both are an exercise of free speech.

With all of the support and protest in the air, inspired by former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, I have really only noticed one problem: hypocrisy. Now, anyone that follows the circus that is American politics already knows that hypocrisy comes with leftist territory, so I’ll cut straight to the chase.

August 1, 2012, was named “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” by Governor Huckabee on his show. Shortly after his announcement, the American people ran with it, and before he knew it, over 500,000 citizens had committed to visiting their local Chick-fil-A. Come to find out, actual attendance was much higher than the Facebook event page suggested. And, of course, this just ate up the liberals’ talking points (I know. Life’s hard.).

Here’s where the hypocrisy came in. As thousands of social conservatives rushed to America’s favorite chicken restaurant, thousands of grumpy social liberals sat in front of their laptops tweeting at every Christian and/or conservative, calling them, none other than the all-original name, ‘bigot’ (they don’t spend too much time on creativity).

Did anyone catch the double-standard? Conservatives responded to the media’s attack on biblical marriage by financially supporting the Chick-fil-A corporation (an action that garnered jeers and scoffs from the left). The hypocrisy is that liberal America did the exact same thing. Conservatives spent money to support the organization in response to the media, and liberals withheld their financial support and stayed home in response to social conservatives. It’s almost like a protest on top of a protest.

I guess this is just one more for the books. Once again, liberal America has told us they stand up for women, minorities, the disabled and the underprivileged (DISCLAIMER: Unless you are a Christian woman, minority, disabled citizen or underprivileged American.)

However, let me end on a positive note. Today’s ‘Appreciation Day’ was a victory not only for Chick-fil-A, but for conservatives, Christians, faith-based organizations and small businesses all across America. Today was an encouragement and a sign that American culture is changing and the vision of the Founders, a vision that is upheld by the cornerstone of faith and the bedrock of Scripture, is making a comeback. I, along with thousands of other Americans, stand with Chick-fil-A and every small business owner across this nation.
